Juan Almonte

Juan Nepomuceno Almonte Ramírez (May 15, 1803 – March 21, 1869) was a Mexican soldier, commander, minister of war, congressman, diplomat, and presidential candidate.

He was the natural son of José María Morelos, a leading commander during the Mexican War of Independence.Almonte was also present at the Battle of the Alamo during the Texas Revolution.

He would serve as Minister of War during multiple administrations and would also serve in various diplomatic posts in the United States and in Europe.

He was minister to the United States in the years leading up to the Mexican American War, and lobbied against interference in Texas which was considered a rebellious Mexican province.

Almonte would go on to collaborate with the French during the Second French Intervention in Mexico in establishing the Second Mexican Empire, and Almonte was serving as a diplomat in France when the Empire fell in 1867.

He would die two years later in 1869.
